Today I read A Paradise Built in Hell for 30 minutes.
My main takeaway is that disasters can bring people together and create small, almost utopian communities. Instead of becoming selfish or chaotic, people often help each other, create a sense of belonging, and focus on what needs to be done.
I also connected with the idea that humans may naturally be capable of cooperation, but normal social structures can sometimes inhibit that capacity. In a crisis, when those structures are disrupted, people can rediscover a stronger sense of community.
The “paradise” is not the disaster itself, but the human connection and cooperation that can emerge from it.
